The Eizan Electric Railway Series 900 “Kirara” (叡山電鉄900系 きらら), introduced in 1997 by Tokyu Car Corporation, is a two-car sightseeing electric train operating on Kyoto’s scenic Eizan and Kurama Lines.
Designed with large panoramic windows, wooden interiors, and rotating seats, it offers passengers stunning views of the mountains and the famous Maple Leaf Tunnel (もみじのトンネル), especially beautiful in autumn.
Powered by 600 V DC overhead lines, its stainless-steel body combines durability and elegance. The name “Kirara”, meaning sparkle, reflects its bright, open design and connection to Kyoto’s natural beauty. Still active today, the Kirara remains a beloved icon of Eizan’s fusion of daily transit and sightseeing charm.
